ALL OVER FOR OLMERT BUT LOOK OUT PALESTINIANS IF THERE IS AN ELECTION AND NETANYAHU GETS IN.

By later today we should know what Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has decided to do. According to reports, Olmert at first decided he would fight off those within his own party, Kadima, who wanted him to step down but, since yesterdays cabinet meeting, it looks as though he has been discouraged from resisting further and has no alternative but to allow a primary spill to replace him.

However, such action may be too late to avert a general election. The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, is set to vote next week, 18 June, to dissolve itself; a move that will trigger a general election. Recent polling has shown that, if an election were to be held in the near future, Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the extreme right-wing and neoconservative Zionist party, Likud, together with its ultra right-wing nationalist allies, would win.

A Netanyahu win will mean disaster for the Palestinian people and for the wider Middle East region. The ultra-hawk Netanyahu is itching to have a go at the Iranian regime and is determined to see the fruition of a Greater Israel that includes the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Golan Height, the Shebaa Farms and even the south of Lebanon up to the Litani River.

One can only hope that all this doesn’t happen while Bush and Cheney are still around in the White House!

The establishment has been trying to rid themselves of Olmeert for years, ever since the fiasco in Lebanon when the Israel army got their butts kicked by Hezbollah. They have no confidence in Olmert and DO NOT want to go to war with Iran and Syria with him at the helm. It's been one scandal after another, it would appear as though the Neocons are finally going to get their wish. He'll be gone, and that wacko Netanyahu will replace him, and this is really scary, since he for sure will push the button. Cheney and Bush are happy with this, the question is when with the change take place and will it be soon enough for them to initiate the war while still in office. This is truly a frightening development,

Just the opposite. This is the best thing that can happen and I will tell you why. Let them go to war with Iran, let them start it. They want a world war thinking they will emerge victorious since they think USA will back them up. And it will but that will spell the end if USA as we know it. And that's the BEST thing that can happen this world of ours. There is no way the current political and economic system to continue in its present form. Therefore it will have to fall. True, it will mean a lot of suffering to us and the world but that's unavoidable. Change IS needed as of yesterday. Once the USA goes to war, the Chinese and the japanese will drop the dollar faster that you can say and the USA's system will go belly up. They won't have a leg to stand on. THis will show the rest of the world as what a failed empire they have become. I can speak like that simply because I did see where things were going and left the USA 2.5 years ago. I urge everyone to do the same.

I'm willing to let the Israelis have a go at whomever they want...just not with US tropps and financial aid. It's easy to be a badass when you have an enforcer to back you up

I do not think people are thinking clearly of the huge human toll and suffering.Liekwaise the access to resources may be limited. Nuclear war is devastating and for centuries plus with the current bigfat boys israel has to drop adn Gates has sent his 15 and 16s whihc carry heavy payload to the drop off point just last week.

There is no doubt preparations are in place just as before Iraq.the question is whether the gamers have distorted the game enough or whether teh exectives dont care anywy and will go ahead.

ps any additions to Ryan's essay?

I think Angela has covered a lot of ground in her piece, and has done so very assertively. I had thought of republishing at this blog when it first appeared as just another post at WD - I thought it was great then - but unfortunately I don't have Angela's email address to ask her for permission.

Something seems to be brewing (isn't there always) and with the windows of opportunity now rapidly closing for the warmongers itching to have a go at Iran, Hamas and Hexbollah, I fear only the worst being just a small matter of time away.
