SARKOZY: BUSH’S NEW EUROPEAN LAPDOG. BUT WILL THE FRENCH PEOPLE SUPPORT HIM IN ATTACKING IRAN?

It looks like Bush has found a new European lapdog to replace Tony Blair. According to a Reuters report in Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald today, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday that his country would ‘stand by Washington in the fight against nuclear proliferation in Iran and terrorism in Afghanistan’. Sounds familiar? It should do, Blair used virtually the same words back in 2002 with the only difference being just one letter; instead of ‘Iran’ Blair was talking about ‘Iraq’.

The French people may have voted Srakozy in for whatever reason but did they really give him a mandate to be Bush’s lapdog? Will the French people go as far as to support Bush in an attack on Iran? The French people have never been backward in coming forward when it comes to taking their displeasure on to the streets. It could well be that Sarkozy by becoming Bush’s lapdog could inadvertantly be triggering the backlash needed to get the rest of world out on to the street to tell our 'leaders' that war against Iran will not be tolerated.

If there is one democracy left in the world where people will still turn out in multitudes to demand their government listen to them on issues as important as this, and then act if their demand is refused, is it France?

By the way, Bush met with Merkel at his ranch in Texas today. Can you imagine a worse place on earth for George W Bush to be when making decisions than on the ranch in Texas? The whole cowboy character he so wants to be being reinforced by the surroundings!

And get this, the White House released a menu to inform the world that whilst Bush tries to convince Merkel to behave like Sarko they were dining "on citrus and arugula salad with shaved parmesan; pecan-smoked beef tenderloin with sauteed mushrooms, green chili-cheese grits souffle, and roasted asparagus; and Prairie Chapel Pecan Pie with Blue Bell ice cream."

I wonder what John Howard dined out on when he committed our nation to a war the people didn't want us being involved in.

After meeting with Merkel, President Bush had this to say:

"What the Iranian regime must understand is that we will continue to work together to solve this problem diplomatically, which means they will continue to be isolated."

Notice what he takes "diplomatically" to mean. He takes it to mean coersion through isolation. That means he's not even contemplating the range of diplomatic approaches and is effectively shutting out approaches that might actually lead to a solution.

Howard committed Australia to war on 11 September 2001. I don't know what he was dining on that day but he's certainly been feeding the Australian people lies ever since.

One can't help but notice that he hasn't dared mention Iran during this election campaign. And, of course, he's painted himself into a bit of a corner as far as the French are concerned. He can't really waffle on about Sarkozy's support for Bush's push against Iran after all the nasty stuff he said about France when they failed to come to the party over Iraq.

Trying to convince Merkel to come on side is pointless except inasmuch that the Germans wield influence in the EU. The two that really matter are China and Russia and Bush will not be getting their support. Basically, Bush is where he was at just before the invasion of Iraq; no UN support but desperate to go. All this diplomacy stuff is just a facade to make it look as if they've exhausted all avenues when in reality they're hoping that diplomacy doesn't work because, if it does, there will be no regime change - which is what they actually want.

I think the way the Pakistan thing pans out will have an effect on the way things progress with Iran.

Perhaps the U.S. will soon go bankrupt, Damian, and let the world off the hook. Then we only have to worry about the extreme fanaticism of the Israelis.

Mind you, the capitulation of Sarkozy is breathtaking. What a difference a day makes!

Of course, the US government is already morally bankrupt; one can only hope that the ordinary everyday people of America don't have to go finacially bankrupt before they realise what their government has done to them.

Sarkozy will need to answer to the French people and eventually the world for his support of global crimainals.

The Shipping News:

On 5 November the USS Harry S. Truman set out quietly for the Persian Gulf.

It'll join the USS Enterprise and USS Nimitz Strike Groups.

...soon to be joined by an Australian warship that left Perth yesterday. Ominous signs!?

America, reinforced by the Mighty Australian Navy, is a formidable force, one that will surely cause Iran to lay down its arms immediately and give up its oil!

I'm in awe.

It's the consequences that are likely to be awesome; especially if this Israelinsider.com article is to be believed.

Thanks, Damian, reading that article has made my day!

A tiny nation of religious crazies who'll allow nothing or no one to stop them pursuing their theological delusions, a nation which also has nukes, is just what our conflicted world needs!

Too true Daniel. One doesn't need too vivid an imagination to envisage where this could all ultimately end.

I wonder if the world really knows how close it is to the possibility of destruction if the extremist loonies at the White House and Knesset have their way.
