The long awaited and much heralded war between the Israeli-US alliance and Iran and Syria now seems imminent. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ but simply a matter of ‘when’.
The point that seems to have been missed by most observers is the fact that it was never a matter of ‘if’ and always a matter of ‘when’. The war has, ever since the fall of the Shah in 1979, been utterly inevitable and virtually unavoidable. It would seem, however, that most observers fell for the propaganda and rhetoric that war between Israel-US and Iran could have been avoided had Iran given up its nuclear weapons ambitions. This was never the case. The coming ‘final confrontation’ was never ever about ‘nuclear weapons’; it has always been about ‘regime change’. It was never anything else.
For the Israelis and the right-wing of US politics the need for ‘regime change’ is simple; Iran under the present regime is the major stumbling block to right-wing Israeli Zionist dreams of creating a Greater Israel. Iran supports Syria; Iran and Syria supports Hizbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza and West Bank. With Iran out of the equation Syria will quickly capitulate to Israeli demands of abandoning their support for Hamas and Hizbollah and any other anti-Israeli pro-Palestinian groups, and then, in turn, Hamas and Hizbollah resistance to Israeli expansionism in pursuit of their ‘Greater Israel’ dream will simply crumble then disappear.
Or at least so the Zionists hope.
There is a big problem with the Israeli-US plan. The people that are pushing the plan to knock Iran out of the picture via a massive blow to their ability to wage any kind of war, i.e., the Bush administration and their neocon cohorts in Washington and the Zionists in Jerusalem, are exactly the same people that came up with the plan to knock Iraq out of the picture. These are exactly the same people that told the world that victory in Iraq will be a ‘cakewalk’ and that the people of Iraq will welcome the US as ‘great liberators’ casting rose petals at the feet of US soldiers as they march up the road to Baghdad. These are exactly the same people who told us that ‘smart weapons’ will eliminate collateral damage and not harm the innocent people of Iraq. These are exactly the same people who, after over a million Iraqis have been killed and another four million pushed from their homes, are saying that ‘things are improving’ in Iraq.
Now these exact same people are telling us that a devastating blow against Iran is all it will take for the people of Iran to rise up against their government and, again, the world is expected to believe them.
The exact same people that bought us the catastrophic mess that is now Iraq now want the world to accept the inevitability of a Final Confrontation against Iran – and the most horrifying aspect of all this is; most of the world will do absolutely nothing to stop it.

The small numbers of marchers in America on Saturday is a worry, Damian.
If the American people can't be bothered trying to stop Bushco then there's not much hope that war can be avoided. And once that war begins no one will be able to put the flames out!
We live in dangerous times although, looking at the trivial threads in some blogs, you wouldn't think so!
It is indeed a worry Daniel.
I think the problem is that the war has been so long in coming with a sort of 'on again', 'off again' build up that people have simply become ho-hum about it all. Of course, when it does come, just watch and see folk jump up and down carrying on about how disgusting it all is especially if the world of Islam decides to erupt in retaliation.
But by then it's too late!
Damian,
Perversely I think the one hope we have might be Putin. Not because he's a good guy, but he has warned the US an attack on Iran will not be tolerated by Russia.
Russians would have to know if the US goes rampaging around attacking countries in the middle east, that Russia will inevitably be next.
Here's hoping.
Terence, I wonder if Israel and the US have really thought through the full consequences of an attack on Iran. I get the feeling that Israel and the US feel that this is just a thing between them and Iran and that it doesn’t actually concern anyone else – especially Russia. There is also a certain air of arrogance among the extreme right-wing of American and Israeli politics whereby they think that Russia doesn’t have any influence anymore on account that they lost the Cold War. For the neocons and the warmongers in the US and Israel the Russians aren’t part of the equation anymore. The problem here is that, while the Soviet Union under the old ‘communist’ regime may have lost the Cold War, the US is making the mistake of not realising that they’re not up against the Soviet Union again but a new Russia that will play by different rules – and they still have many, many nuclear armed missiles aimed at the US. Just as the old Soviet Union was a force to be reckoned with, so is the new Russia. The old Soviet Union may have caved in but the new Russia hasn’t.
It seems that the US will not get their way at the UN next week (25 September I think) when they’re going to push for tougher sanctions against Iran. The US has France, and the UK on side but the Russians and Chinese won’t have a bar of it.
Besides, it’s not about Irans ‘nuclear weapons’, it’s about regime change. The US will ignore Russia (at its peril) and push ahead with what the tunnel-visioned neocons believe will be another ‘cakewalk’ that will not require invasion but will, they believe, be such a devastating blow that the Iranian people themselves will effect ‘regime change’. Totally delusional, but that’s what they think will happen.
I have one quibble in that the chaos (to be understated) in Iraq, in my view, is not a mistake for the neocons, it is a success. The same goes for Iran.
Balkanization is the name of the game.
The only part of their plan that hasn't been successful thus far is that they have lost the battle to use Iraqi oil to break up OPEC. Big Oil still weilds a lot of clout and its priorities are not always coincidental with the neocon Likudniks.
I couldn't agree more with you Cringin'. The Iraq thing and the coming Iran thing are contingent with each other and are as a result of several converging interests; not least of them being the Israeli Zionists ideal of being rid of two major enemies, then there is the Christian-Zionist right that have poured money and influence into the Israeli Zionist cause, Big Oil who have an interest in hegemony of oil as well as actual oil, Big Military who need war to continue selling weaponary to those that fight wars, and big industry who have interests in servicing and rebuilding during and after wars. Ever since war found a partner with the industrial age and all it has to offer, there have always been the 'carpetbaggers' following up behind execept they don't follow up behind anymore; they're there when it happens and sometimes even before!
