AUSTRALIANS AT WAR

THE NEOCONS WRITE A LETTER TO OBAMA ABOUT LIBYA.

The Foreign Policy Initiative, one of the heads from the now defunct neoconservative Hydra called the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), has written an open letter to President Obama calling for the US and their allies in NATO to take action against Gaddafi in Libya.

Most people throughout the world would agree that action does indeed need to taken to end the slaughter there; but would not the earnestness of genuine humanitarian sentiment have far more credibility if the call for action to stop the slaughter in Libya came from people other than the neocons suggesting what the American president should do? After all, this letter is signed by the same people who organised and pushed for the war against the Iraqi people; a war that killed hundreds of thousands if not over million Iraqi people and displaced millions more while at the same time all but destroying the infrastructure of an entire nation – and all just to get rid of Saddam Hussein. If those same neocons are pushing for action on Libya then you just know that they have some ulterior motive for doing so other than sincerely caring about the future of your average Libyan.

If I were a Libyan, the last bunch of people I’d want interfering with my struggle for self-determination against a tyrant would be the same bunch of neocons that have already been responsible for the destruction of at least one other Arab nation.

good article on Libya and Gadaffi

'How was Libya doing under the rule of Gadaffi? How bad did the people have it? Were they oppressed as we now commonly accept as fact? Let us look at the facts for a moment.

Before the chaos erupted, Libya had a lower incarceration rate than the Czech republic. It ranked 61st. Libya had the lowest infant mortality rate of all of Africa. Libya had the highest life expectancy of all of Africa. Less than 5% of the population was undernourished. In response to the rising food prices around the world, the government of Libya abolished ALL taxes on food.

People in Libya were rich. Libya had the highest gross domestic product (GDP) at purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita of all of Africa. The government took care to ensure that everyone in the country shared in the wealth. Libya had the highest Human Development Index of any country on the continent. The wealth was distributed equally. In Libya, a lower percentage of people lived below the poverty line than in the Netherlands.

How does Libya get so rich? The answer is oil. The country has a lot of oil, and does not allow foreign corporations to steal the resources while the population starves, unlike countries like Nigeria, a country that is basically run by Shell.

Like any country, Libya suffers from a government with corrupt bureaucrats that try to gain a bigger portion of the pie at the cost of everyone else. In response to this, Kadaffi called for the oil revenue to be distributed directly to the people, because in his opinion, the government was failing the people. However, unlike the article claims, Kadaffi is not the president of Libya. In fact he holds no official position in the government. This is the big mistake that people make. They claim that Kadaffi rules over Libya when in fact he doesn't, his position is more or less ceremonial. He should be compared to a founding father.

Who else is going to help take down the murderous Gadaffi?

Certainly not the Socialist Left, who have been either far too supportive of late or completely unable to condem Gadaffi at all.

- Nicagarua's Daniel Ortega has expressed his "solidarity" with Gadaffi the butcher.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110222/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_nicaragua_ortega_libya

- Cuba's Castro has defended Gadaffi by blaming the West for a supposed plan to invade Libya and take its oil.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/02/22/501364/main20034949.shtml

- Venezuala's Chavez has flatly refused to even condemn the atrocities in Libya, instead decrying the civil war that his friend now faces.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/06/AR2011030603790.html

His seedy and idolatary association with Gadaffi, in particular (naming streets, stadiums etc), goes beyond the pale.

Who else are the Libyan people going to rely on? The Socialist supporters of their tormentor?

One imagines that Chavez, Castro and Ortega have Roosevelt's words in mind:

"He may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch."

Perhaps some people would prefer, instead of Western intervention by so called (and bizarrely laballed) "neo-cons", that the Libyan populace just die waiting. Even despite this being a typical example of a popular people's revolution.

My goodness, the nerve.
Have they no compassion at all.
Talk about heartless Machiavellians.

I am so confused. I read what a wonder ful father Muamar Khadafi is to his people by Jalusbrian and then elsewhere I read of lack of democracy and torture and ethnic cleansing type stuff. Then we have a neocon letter to go in (well that does fit with the oil) and we read of democratic countries like Israel having companies supplying mercenaries to Khadafi and his son planning to marry an Israeli socialite, oy what is going on really?

BTW who collectst the data ? Does everyone sharing in the wealth (ahem) include those not of his tribal affiliations?

And if Khadafi holds no official position ...........why does he have all the power and is grooming his son to take over, the "more liberal" Saif with all his propery around the world, just like all the other Libyans , even the streetsweepers , have, mansions, cos it is all so shared isnt it?

Strong man ...educated poplution ...discovers internet and whatis really happening in the world and what other people have as far as self determination,,,,,see Tunisia and Egypt get it and want it now....so many joined in.....but didnt make those deals before hand with the oil powers ......so no action internationally in time....)remeber Blair and Bush "waiting a week and I liked the jumper did you knit yourself" during the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon?.........methinks same thing.

Wait , it 'll be a mess and you can then have the ICC hanging over his head to control him.

The international powers have NEVER supported the Warsaw uprisings , people power is tooo scary .

cheers Damian, keeping it all still :)
